About the Position

As an Apprentice Lineworker, you will assist with electrical distribution line construction, maintenance, and repair in accordance with Stoughton Utilities standards. Responsibilities will expand as you progress through the apprenticeship program, allowing you to develop technical skills, gain hands-on experience, and work with increasing independence.

This position provides the education and field experience necessary to advance to Journeyman Lineworker status upon successful completion of all required classroom instruction, supervised work hours, and demonstrated competencies.

This position requires residency within a 30-minute response time of the City of Stoughton.

Schedule & Standby Details

  • Rotating standby duty with additional compensation

  • Respond to after-hours electrical calls during assigned standby weeks*

  • Occasional assistance outside of standby rotations during major events

  • Low volume of standby calls due to proactive maintenance and system reliability

  • Essential position requiring availability during citywide emergencies

Key Responsibilities

The City is seeking a self-motivated, responsible individual with excellent communication skills who thrives in a team environment. Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with electrical distribution line construction, maintenance, and repair

  • Working in the field for extended periods

  • Accessing work areas by foot, ladder, or elevated platforms

  • Performing duties in varying and potentially hazardous environmental conditions

  • Participating in apprenticeship training and developing technical skills

Qualifications & Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent, plus vocational or technical training in electrical systems, or a combination of education and at least 3–4 years of experience providing equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Successful completion of a nine-month electric power distribution technical course or enrollment in the State of Wisconsin Lineworker Apprenticeship Program preferred

  • Must maintain enrollment in the State of Wisconsin Lineworker Apprenticeship Program

  • Must have or obtain and maintain forklift certification and CPR/First Aid certification

  • Must have or obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker and airbrake endorsements

  • Valid motor vehicle operator's license required at hire

  • Must be within a 30-minute drive of Stoughton Utilities when on call

  • Successful completion of a background check, driver's license check, pre-employment physical, and drug screening

Compensation & Benefits

  • Full-time, non-exempt position

  • Starting hourly rate of $46.27
