The TPO-III Wastewater Operator is responsible for operating and monitoring wastewater treatment plant equipment at the Jones Island facility in Milwaukee. This position performs routine process control testing, collects samples, records equipment readings, completes operational reports, and assists with light maintenance and general housekeeping. The operator also works closely with plant staff to ensure equipment is operating properly and that all safety procedures and treatment requirements are followed.

Responsibilities and Job Duties:

  • Follow all applicable safety rules, regulations, policies, and procedures, and participate in required safety training activities.

  • Report any unsafe conditions encountered in performance of duties.

  • Operate assigned treatment plant equipment by starting and regulating semi-automatic controls, note malfunctioning equipment, make adjustments where possible, and refer maintenance problems to the Shift Supervisor.

  • Record and interpret meter and gauge readings from equipment.

  • Receive and store chemicals and supplies related to the position.

  • Take periodic samples for laboratory analysis.

  • Perform tests for process control.

  • Record activities in log and prepare and submit daily shift operational reports.

  • Perform light maintenance duties including general housekeeping, lamp checks, valve and gate exercising, clearing minor jams on screws, and preventive back flushing of pumps and systems.

  • Communicate and cooperate with co-workers, take direction from TPO IV Purification Plant or Leadperson as required, and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.

  • Environmental Associate's Degree or higher, and/or two to three years operating experience in a water/wastewater treatment plant.

  • Wastewater Operator Certification required.

  • Subclass B for Solids Separation required.

  • Valid Wisconsin driver's license.

  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the job.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • Knowledge of operating equipment used in wastewater treatment.

  • Some knowledge of the operation and adjustment of valves, mechanical pumps, motors, and semi-automatic controls.

  • Ability to navigate and operate computer control systems.

  • Ability to read and understand dials, meters, and gauges, and to locally control equipment if needed.

  • Ability to prepare a log of routine activity and enter data.

  • Basic skills in computers, data input devices, email, and office software.

  • Effective written and oral communication skills with co-workers, supervisors, managers, and others.

  • Participation in Veolia Water programs to keep current with technology is required.

  • Participation in formal education, MATC coursework, or State Certification training is desired.
