Summary of Position

The Assistant Village Engineering Technician performs professional engineering work involving design, investigation, development, maintenance, and construction of public works projects within the Village of Jackson. This role provides support directly to the Director of Public Works and reports to work Monday through Friday from 7AM-3:30PM and occasionally hours outside of that time as requested. This position is a salaried position, on average working 40 hours per week. The hiring range is between $30-$42 per hour, and dependent upon qualifications. Complete applications will be reviewed on Monday, November 24th at 4PM. Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Other duties or functions may be required from time to time, and thus the information below is not an exhaustive list of responsibilities for this role. 

  • Confers with Developers to discuss proposed expansion of existing road and utility systems.
  • Receives and reviews complaints from the public and plays a role in conflict or problem resolution.
  • Reviews and coordinates work of engineering consultants for compliance with contracts.
  • Assists in scheduling the construction of Village projects.
  • Assists with the creation of special assessment reports.
  • Attends departmental and Board of Public Works meetings as needed and prepares reports when necessary.
  • Performs technical research and develops solutions to engineering problems.
  • Reviews surveys and plans for compliance with specifications.
  • Confers with property owners, utility companies and others as needed.
  • Attends training programs and seminars as directed by the Director.
  • Drafts contracts and related documents.
  • Assists Director with project coordination.
  • Writes descriptions of easements and rights-of-way.
  • Coordinates projects with State of Wisconsin regulatory agencies.
  • Conducts surveys on properties to determine boundaries and/or establish easements.
  • Supervises projects and inspections from contract commencement through final restoration and contract close out.
  • Coordinates mapping and GIS base systems.

 

Education and/or Experience Required

EDUCATION AND PRIOR EXPERIENCE:
Minimum requirements include considerable knowledge of Civil Engineering as it relates to the municipal field and graduation from a technical college or university of recognized standing with major work in civil engineering. Applicants that are registered as an EIT (Engineer In Training) in the State of Wisconsin is desirable. Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skill, and abilities listed may also be considered.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
A successful candidate will be an EIT (Engineer In Training) registered with the State of Wisconsin or possess an equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skill, and abilities of the role. 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of civil engineering as related to the preparation of plans and specifications for public works projects is expected. Applicants should have considerable knowledge of construction materials and approved standards of safety. Candidates shall possess the ability to adapt approved engineering methods and standards in the design and construction of public utility projects is necessary. The selected candidate shall also have the ability to establish and maintain working relationship with Village officials, various boards and the general public. Lastly, this role requires the ability to prepare a variety of technical reports, specifications and contracts in connection with public improvement projects. A successful candidate will also demonstrate the ability to maintain mental alertness and meet the physical needs of the position.
