This position provides for performance of tasks related to maintenance of streets, sidewalks, storm sewers, park maintenance and mowing, public facilities, storm water facilities, vehicle and equipment maintenance. This position has responsibilities to assist in public works and utility operations. 

  • Drives trucks and light utility vehicles of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling, and unloading of various equipment, including snow plows, tractors, loaders, street sweepers, skid steers, mowers, trimmers, pumps, generators, compressors, and related small engine equipment.
  • Does general and trench excavation associated with the maintenance and repair of streets, sidewalks, storm sewers, parking lots, etc.
  • Sweeps streets, performs concrete repairs/replacement, patches potholes and street excavations, installs street signs, and paints street markings.
  • Mows and trims grass and weeds, rakes and collects leaves, chips brush, and trims trees and shrubs.
  • Maintains and cleans parks, recreational facilities, playgrounds and equipment, natural areas, drainage ways, and storm water management areas.
  • Maintains village owned or leased buildings, grounds and parking lots.
  • Performs routine welding tasks and other maintenance tasks, (such as minor roofing repair and painting and staining of the village owned buildings and equipment).
  • Ensures the proper maintenance of equipment and tools by cleaning and checking them after use.
  • Installs holiday decorations and flags during designated times.
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks on all public works’ vehicles and equipment and makes sure that public works’ vehicles and equipment are clean and properly cared for.
  • Assists in operating a brush chipper on a weekly basis and in performing maintenance on the chipper.
  • Clean storm sewer catch basins on as-needed basis.
  • Confer with Director of Public Works on a daily basis concerning work assignments to ensure that the department is operating in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
  • Help to establish and maintain a positive image with the general public. Respond to questions, concerns, comments and other issues related to the department.  Public relations are always to be positive rather than negative.
  • Participate in the on-call schedule of the department.
  • Have proficient computer skills.

·         Must be able to perform work duties outside during inclement weather and during storm conditions.

·         Must be able to operate a sewer jetting machine and other equipment for cleaning storm sewers.

·         Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

·         Maintain all buildings and grounds in excellent condition and ensure a safe and secure work environment.

·         Any other duties as assigned by the Director of Public Works.

REQUIREMENTS OF WORK

·         High school diploma or equivalency required with the minimum of an Associate’s degree preferred.

·         Possess a Valid Commercial Drivers License, subclasses B and D, or have the ability to obtain one.

·         Any combination of education and experience which in the sole discretion of the Village would demonstrate the Employee’s ability to meet the required knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position may also be considered.
