Wastewater Treatment Plant Worker II

The City of Platteville seeks a Wastewater Treatment Plant Worker II. The successful candidate will work with a team to operate and maintain the City’s Wastewater Treatment Plant. The position requires a high school education or GED and 1-3 years of related experience. While direct experience is not necessary, mechanical aptitude is required. Computer skills are also required.  Successful candidates will be reliable, possess a strong work ethic, display initiative on the job, thrive in a team setting and be able to obtain their WI Wastewater Certification with 24 months of hire. CDL license is required within 6 months of hire. Salary based on experience but not less than $20.56 per hour.

Job Description:

Wastewater Treatment Plant Worker ll

Perform daily checks of treatment plant processes to keep plant performing within Discharge limits. Help perform lab test, maintain; equipment, buildings and grounds as needed to keep all in working order.

Section 1. Specific Activities
1.1 Collects samples and identifies concentrations of chemical, physical or biological characteristics of wastewater required in accordance with local, state of Wisconsin and Federal requirements; gathers and tests wastewater samples for plant efficiency reports as required.
1.2 Maintains records on plant operation and maintenance.
1.3 Inspects plant equipment and machinery to determine if all equipment is operating properly, makes minor and major repairs and adjustments.
1.4 Performs lab work when required.
1.5 Hauls sludge.
1.6 Gives tours of plant as required.
1.7 Maintain grounds and buildings; lawn maintenance, snow removal, painting, repairs and cleaning
1.8 Perform confined space entries using safety equipment and safety program

2.1 Performs other related duties as requested or as needed.

Logical or scientific thinking to solve problems; several abstract and concrete variables. Arithmetic, algebraic, and geometric calculations. Working knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in wastewater treatment plant maintenance and operation activities; working knowledge of laboratory procedures and practices. Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment.
Ability to file, post, and mail materials; copy data from one record to another; guide people and provide basic direction. Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, with suppliers/vendors; federal/state governmental or regulatory agencies. Ability to use computers, learn and work with new technology and use user interface controls. Employee will be familiar with details of job to do it well within 6 months.

Equipment used includes pH meter, D.O. meter, Mettler balance, microscope, sludge truck, backhoe, mechanics tools required for plant maintenance, welder, paint sprayer, lawn mower, ladders, scaffolding, gas meters, computers, electrical testers, plow truck and centrifuge. Drives truck to haul and spread sludge.

The following elements serve to identify the required acceptable experience and qualifications:

2 1-3 years of related experience. Mechanical aptitude required.
3 Valid Wisconsin driver's license with ability to obtain Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with B, C, D endorsements, tanker and air brakes within 6 months
4 Must successfully complete a criminal background check and drug screening to be eligible for the position.
5 Wisconsin Wastewater Operator Certification including:
a. Biological Solids/Sludge Handling, Processing and Reuse- Basic
b. Biological Treatment: Attached Growth Processes - Basic
c. Biological Treatment: Suspended Growth Processes- Basic
d. Disinfection – Basic
e. Laboratory – Basic
f. Nutrient Removal: Total Phosphorus – Basic
g. Solids Separation - Basic
Must be able to acquire the above within 24 months of hire.
Desired: All above as Advanced. Must be willing and able to complete necessary continuing education each year to maintain certification.

While performing the duties of this job, employee is exposed daily to noise from pumps in enclosed areas; dampness in tunnels and basements; equipment movement hazards from dewatering machinery, sludge truck, and over 60 pumps; dangerous chemicals/solvents from chemicals in lab, Cl2 and SO2; electrical shock from control panels; fumes from plant processes.
