Chemist (Part Time) - Brookfield

PURPOSE: The Chemist is principally responsible for analyzing water quality.  This position performs work activities associated with testing procedures, calculating results, and maintaining test information records, including updating Quality Control records and computer data entry.



¨       Provides analytical support for various studies, projects, and pretreatment testing. 

¨       Performs wet chemistry, microbiological, and spectrophotometric duties. 

¨       Conducts tests to analyze stream conditions and river samples. 

¨       Collects samples and analyzes various types of water and wastewater by performing routine lab tests. 

¨       Calculates results and communicates with lab supervisor or operations personnel. 

¨       Sets up and calibrates lab instruments and mixes required chemical reagents. 

¨       Maintains equipment and repairs meters.  Sets MDL's and LOQ's annually.

¨       Cleans laboratory including, glassware, sample containers, lab instruments and equipment, lab surfaces, and sinks.  Follows all laboratory quality control measures specified in the Lab Quality Manual or specific methodologies.

¨       Assure the complete and accurate collection of data generated by departmental operations as reflected within the department’s various information systems. 

¨       Calculates and enters results into database and files bench sheets.

¨       Maintains accurate accounts of industrial pretreatment visits. 

¨       Maintains log of equipment purchases and maintenance schedule. 

¨       Maintains inventory of equipment and chemicals for the lab to ensure adequate supplies are available.    




1.       Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or related field.

2.       At least 1 year experience in chemistry, microbiology, or water quality analysis.

3.       Knowledge of wastewater treatment plant laboratory procedures preferred.

4.       Ability to work a rotational schedule to include: days, weekends (every second or third weekend), and some holidays.


Lab Technician*:

1.       Knowledge equivalent to a high school diploma.  Associates or Technical degree in a science or related field preferred.

2.       Previous experience in chemistry, microbiology, or water quality analysis preferred.

3.       Knowledge of wastewater treatment plant laboratory procedures preferred.

4.       Ability to work a rotational schedule to include: days, weekends (every second or third weekend), and some holidays.

                Equivalent combinations of training and experience may be considered.

* The City has the right to fill the position vacancy at either the Lab Technician or Chemist level based and knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant.


2020 SALARY RANGE:          Chemist: Pay Range 119:  $24.03-$27.48 per hour.

                                          Laboratory Technician: Pay Range 109:  $16.24-$18.56 per hour 

                                          (Appointment is normally at the beginning of the salary range.)


THE SELECTION PROCESS will be job related and will consist of one or more of the following:  training and experience evaluation; written, oral or performance tests; or other assessment methods.  The Department of Human Resources reserves the right to call only the most qualified candidates to oral and performance examinations.  Oral examinations may include written exercises.
