Editor's Message By Jon Butt
Format - We'll take pretty much anything. If you can supply it to us in an electronic format as an attachment to an e-mail message, or on a diskette, that saves us the work of re-typing it. But if you don't have access to such tools don't let that stop you from contributing! We can scan most everything that is typed. And we will type handwritten submissions, as long as we can read your handwriting. We will do as much or as little editing as you want.
Cover Photos - We frequently find ourselves looking for cover material. If you have a relatively recent photo we can use it. It doesn't necessarily have to be an aerial photo either. We need some description of the treatment facility to go with the cover photo. This can be just the bare design basis, or it can be a more elaborate description of the unique features of the system.
Other Photos or Graphics - It is truly amazing what we can do with computers today. And we've all heard the saying that a picture is worth a thousand words. (That's a lot of typing if you type like me!) So don't hesitate to include pictures or charts or graphs. Just remember that if you can include higher quality submittal's, it will look all that much better in the newsletter itself.
News from DNR or EPA - One of the main reasons that I enjoy working with The Clarifier staff, is the fact that there is a real need to improve communication between the regulators and the regulated. I am especially grateful to my colleagues who put together the Northwest Ripplings, and allow us to reprint some articles like the one from Susan Watson appearing elsewhere in this edition. And occasionally I will pester someone for a submittal when I know of some particularly timely issue. But I certainly don't know everything, so please contact me if there is something of interest.
Note to Vendors - We appreciate hearing from equipment suppliers and consulting engineers, but please bear in mind that sometimes the distinction between advertising and news comes down to a fine line. So we may do some editing of some submittal's. We will include the name of the individual and company, along with phone number or address or e-mail address as appropriate. But remember that it is information helpful to treatment plant operators that we are really looking to publish.
Feedback - This newsletter is intended for to good of the membership, to promote the goals of WWOA. Members should feel free to comment on published material. Good, thought-provoking commentary can be extremely useful. While no really likes to be criticized, constructive criticism is beneficial. And if something is published which is downright false or misleading, then it deserves correction.
Ideas - Even if you don't feel comfortable writing a story yourself, you can contribute. If you know someone who has successfully tackled a tough problem, or solved some problem in a new way, that you think others should hear about, why not ask them to put something together. Perhaps their local DNR representative, equipment supplier or consulting engineer would help put it into writing. Or we, the editors could also help. And if it is a particularly complex or an emerging issue, we might ask an expert to provide their perspective in a "Guest Column", something the Board of Directors also approved for The Clarifier.
